I bought these Catwatch cat deterrent.
One to cover each side of the garden - so two. They are from the RPSB shop and don't affect the birds at all.
Hope this helps
Steve | Sounds like a good product, well worth a try in my opinion. |

| | | Re: I so sad, (may offend cat owners) thankyou all
I understand about the cats natral instint for them, I do think it the cat had a bell it would'nt have manage to get this bird.
I thinking of getting a Catwatch thing. But I have ferrets, dog and hedgehog that use's the garden, and oviously don't want to upset my own animals and I the hedgehog.
I posted on a ferret furum the same thing, and all they cared about was, I should grow up and realise it was a fact of life. Witch I know. I just wanted to share with them.
Thankyou all here for your understanding.

| | | Re: I so sad, (may offend cat owners) I came home from a walk the other day to find a starling in the front room. Earlier I had left the back door open for the dogs, it was raining and I guess he had flown in unnoticed.
He took us all by surprise and what happend next was too quick for me.
The bird took off and Max took after him. Not much I could do. by the time I caught up with them (expecting to clean up the mess) I found Bird and Max on the kitchen floor, bird hopping around, Max sniffing him. Told him he was a good boy and opened the doors for the bird.
Max is a very strong, young, German shepherd. He can seem very intimidating. But he is not a cat. I am not saying he wouldn't hurt a fly, he certainly would. well not flies but threats and he does bite. well he bit me, my fault. Theres just nothing bad about him. He wouldn't kill something just because he could. and there's the rub. There is something wrong with cats.
I have thought about buying Max a kitten to help bring out his feminine side but I can't come to terms with cats desire to kill, kill, kill. Even with Max as its mother it would grow up a killer.
And they give you fleas.
Well thats my 2 cents worth, again.
Colin

| | | Re: I so sad, (may offend cat owners) We have a cat, but she is a house cat so we only let her out in the garden and she is white so she hardly ever catches anything except for insects. I do hate it when the cats kill the birds and other wild creatures, unfortunately there are lots of cats around here, I think its one house in particular to blame as they must have about 20 cats. So nearly everyday we see a cat in our garden. Inspite of this we do seem have a wide variety and lots of birds in the garden and I have never seen any dead birds that have been caught by cats, I suppose we're just lucky. |

No you can blame irresponsible cat owners who allow cats to roam where they please killing wildlife. Domestic cats are not a predator that occurs naturally in the UK their numbers are way in excess of those that natural predators can sustain and are not regulated by predator/prey relationships as domestic cats are fed by their owners - work carried out by the mammal socvietry shows that cats have a hugely detrimental effect on British wildlife. Quote: |
Based on the proportion of cats bringing home at least one prey item and the back-transformed means, a British population of approximately 9 million cats was estimated to have brought home in the order of 92 (85-100) million prey items in the period of this survey, including 57 (52-63) million mammals, 27 (25-29) million birds and 5 (4-6) million reptiles and amphibians.
| Some US cities are now making illegal to allow cats to roam free off of the owners property in order to protect wildlife. |

| | | Re: I so sad, (may offend cat owners) everyone who has their garden plagued by cats has my sympathy.I use all the electronic devices available, with I think some success. Cat owners talk about "instinct" as if that explains everything. I dont want to hurt any animal including cats, but I think I have the right to not want them in my wildlife garden. They are an introduced predator, existing in the UK only for the amusement of their owners.Wildlife has enough to contend with. CATOWNERS control your "pet" I dont want it in my garden.
Regards to all who value our wildlife. |

| | | Re: I so sad, (may offend cat owners) I blame the owners completely. The least they can do is have a bell put on the collar, and have them neutered, but it IS in their make-up to hunt, this will never be bred out of them no matter how much you try, and as for enjoying it - this is not the right word in my opinion, my mum has had cats all her life and I've watched them chase everything that moves and it is pure instinct whether you like it or not, but I'm not sure enjoyment in the human sense is what they get out of it

Rescued a cat from being abused in the street and on entering the websites for animal welfare such as cats protection quickly realised the extent of the problem. Too many cats and not enough good homes. It's always the animals that suffer. . I don't own a cat myself, one of my dogs spends most of her time on cat watch in the garden . |

Just looked at your Moth photographs, Brilliant !! I think there is a shortage of moths this year, have sat in the garden on the very few warmish nights without seeing moths, plenty of bats.
Anyway thanks for the redirect to your photos.
