Bird of Prey id please

I saw this flying over our garden this afternoon. I'd appreciate help in identifying it. Doesn;t seem like our usual overhead visitors.

Any approximate idea of size? I'd say hobby or peregrine, but someone else will probably give you a better answer!

Possible peregrine or maybe even a gull of some sort

Re: Bird of Prey id please

Not an easy shot to tell from. The head looks more gull-like than raptor-like although the wing shape is about right for a peregrine.

Here's a couple more shots. I'd been wondering about the hobby or peregrine.

Re: Bird of Prey id please

I'm pretty sure it's a Peregrine, The broad wings and chest and the fairly short tail are a giveaway, also the barred breast rather than the streaked breast of a Hobby.
Nice one to have over the garden, well done!

Re: Bird of Prey id please

Thanks all. That makes it a first for me. Well it would also have been a first as a Hobby, but you probably know what I mean. Sorry for the poor quality shots... white sky and no sun made it tricky, plus it was a heck of height for my lens.

Re: Bird of Prey id please

I see these birds nearly every day, they are nesting on a nearby quarry, Peregrine falcons.

Re: Bird of Prey id please

I had better luck today though. This is definitely a kestrel. But I haven't got a clue what it's eating!

Fantastic photos, what an opportunity you lucky so-and-so! I, too, have no idea what it's eating but it doesn't matter with great shots like that
