How Petty

I woke up this morning ready to spend some time in the garden hoping to capture some images of the Siskins that visit our feeders. Imagine my horror when I went outside only to discover that someone has been in our garden and stolen every feeder we own. (and that's three feeder stations with a total of about twenty feeders)

What's that all about???

John

Re: How Petty

That's unbelievable John. I've heard of hanging baskets and tubs being pinched but bird feeders is a new one on me.

You're not having much luck at the moment are you? First you lose your camera and then your feeders. Hopefully your luck will change soon.

best wishes,

Matt

Re: How Petty

That's awful John. Why on Earth would someone do that? I'd be looking at neighbours gardens to see if they suddenly get interested in the birds. Good feeders are expensive too. Hope whoever nicked them has a garden that remains sterile of birds for good! ww

John

I can not believe this. What mindless people we seem to have in parts of our community today. I could use a few other words to describe them but I would probably get banned from WAB.

As the previous poster said, you have not been at all lucky recently.

I am sure things will look up for you soon. At least you are back in action with a camera.

Re: How Petty

That's incredible.

I guess there could be a number of reasons, like a thief taking them to sell them, kids playing a prank or someone going OTT about bird flu, but whatever the reason, it's incredible.

Have a good walk about this morning John and you may just find them stuffed in a bush. Our house was burgled a couple of years ago and we found a digital projector 100m aways hidden in a neighbours garden bin.

best of luck

Stu

Re: How Petty

Your right about our luck at the moment. We had to take our old retreiver (Jasper) to the vet for an operaition last Friday and whilst they were X-raying another area discovered a shadow which could be a tumor. We are trying some medication out but the results will not be known for a while yet. We feel as though we are reeling from one thing to another at the moment.

I must admit I have already gone for a walk around the district and seen nothing untoward. I doubt if I will find who the idiot is that did this.

It's sad watching the birds come down totally confused on where their food source has gone. I have piled the food on the bird tables but all that's going onto them are the Blackbirds and Robins and the occasional Starling.

I will pop up the road after 11am to see if the pet shop is open. It looks like I am going to have to shell out to replace them all. Hopefully he will have a good stock of feeders but even if he has I'm going to be a bit nervous to put them out for fear of them being nicked again.

John

Re: How Petty

Hi John

Sorry to hear about your loss. That really is quite poor form. There was a late fight on the TV last night. Do you live anywhere near a pub that may have been showing it? Sounds like it could be drunken Hi Jinx that has got out of hand. Can't believe a fellow nature lover would deprive you in such a way.

Re: How Petty

We are in a bit of a hidden cul-de-sac with no one to the one side of us and no where near a pub. We do have a track that runs alongside our house that people use from time to time and my Mrs remarked last night that there had been a gang of rowdy youths that had just walked by.

The annoying thing is our Jasper would normally have barked if anyone comes into the garden but last night he was under the weather and still suffering from the operation.

Re: How Petty

If it was the youths, and as I said Hi Jinx, they could have just dumped them somewhere. I'd have a good route round if I were you mate. We've had snow in Brum. If you got some in Cov there may be a trail.

Re: How Petty

Sorry to hear of the theft John, that is a lot of feeders to replace not cheap you have obviously reported the theft and have pictures to corroberate
will the household insurers not be sympathetic?
The two things that come to mind are:it was someone terrified of Flu infected birds being drawn to the area
or on a lighter note WAB has generated so much interest there is a shortage of feeders in your area

Re: How Petty

I've had the same problem John.I've got a feeding station at the edge of our local wood ( no garden ) and in the past year I've had 11 feeders stolen or taken down and probably dumped somewhere also the water bowls have been emptied and thrown into the field I've had to replace these 3 times, I don't know what minds these people have Being a great dog lover I know how you must be feeling about Jasper, I hope he goes on okay.

Re: How Petty

What a morning I'm having. Went to the side of the garden to check down the bank by the side of our house (full of Brambles) and it was then that I noticed that some idiot has tried to pull down our fence and has smashed the connecting parts to the posts.

Then just as I had finished a post in WAB we received a power cut in the area that shut everything down for over an hour.

I'll be glad to get back to work at this rate. Not one of more memorable weekend so far.

John

Re: How Petty

Im sorry to hear of the feeders and of your poor dog. I lost my dog about two years ago I still miss her. Hope yours gets better soon. Is it possible to plant anything spicky. We have lots of spicky bushes the birds love them and they keep unwelcolm pests out of the garden.
It sounds like mindless thugs prob looking for something valuble to sell on.Only finding feeders took them. Im not saying your feeders aren't valuble dont get me wrong. It's normaly gardening stuff they nick. The gardening season will soon be here.

Hi Kayleigh.

Our problem is that we park the car in the driveway which runs down the side of the house. The gates that we use to get the car into the garden anyone could get through so there is no point in us protecting the sides of the garden (allthough we have large clumps of winter Jasmine part way along and Rose bushes continuing on from there.

Thankfully all our garden stuff is locked away in the garage. I just think it's mindless idiot's that have nothing better to do than create these sort of disturbances.

That's the part that answers it all, lack of respect. The frightening thing nowadays is the lack of conscience by certain members of our society. It's as though they can't see any wrong in what they do or more to the point they don't care.

I'm sorry, what's your point.

Are you saying that if they have a fear of Bird flu they have the right to come into my garden without permission and remove anything that might upset them. I don't think so.

No need to apologise John. No I wasn't. My question was deliberately written to get you to think about your last post. I think you've had enough time now.

I was trying to suggest it may be down to the lack of conscience from the "Doctors of Journalism" that may have triggered a knee-jerk reaction from someone nearby who's susceptible to believing what he/she sees in print.

I would think you are totally correct in that assumption. Like many things that are media driven a lot of the general public are easily fooled into thinking that what they read in newspapers has to be true when you and I know that it is quite the opposite.

Being media driven into beliefs then taking the law into your own hands is a different matter. If you were to see the make up of our garden you would realise that whoever came in was taking one heck of a chance as there is only one way in and one way out, and that route is very easily cut off. I honestly think it was the bravado of youth that did this and not some pre-conceived notion of reacting against bird flu, but I could be wrong.

John
