| | Eagle Owl in Northants. Walking my Springer yesterday about 5:00 pm in a copse just outside Daventry and my dog stopped and sat, looked up at the branch 10 feet up and there was this owl nearly 3 feet high by at least 12" wide perched with a pigeon in its tallons! It had piercing orange eyes and when it took flight its span must have been 6 foot; it rose right up to the top of the next biggest tree and stayed out of sight, the only photo I could get on my phone was of the half eaten pigeon but what an experience ! Will be back with my Pentax and fingers crossed will spot it again. |

BTW I have only just noticed that you are a new member. May I extend a very warm welcome to WAB. I'm sure you will like it on here as we are a friendly bunch.

| | | Re: Eagle Owl in Northants. We have a resident Eagle Owl around here, which is very easy to see. I think they're fantastic but there are some people who want it catching as they are worried about their pets. I held one a few years back and they're really heavy but absolutely beautiful. |

| | | Re: Eagle Owl in Northants. One of my colleagues lives in Northants and tells me there's a guy in a nearby village who takes in and looks after injured Birds of Prey. Apparently he has an Eagle Owl which he allows to fly freely around the village but which has a homing instinct and always returns to him! My colleague sees it regularly - in fact, one evening it was sat on her gatepost as she got home from work - imagine that!!

| | | Re: Eagle Owl in Northants. Hi Ash
I have had no chance to go for the bird yet. Last weekend I was in Norfolk on the Saturday and Sunday and Monday was a total washout. I certainly wasn't going to venture out in that weather.
Today saw me driving up to Gibraltar Point, near Skegness, in the hope of finding the Greater Yellowlegs, but of course it didn't show. Tomorrow I have to go into Birmingham after a part for one of my outdoor Bio Filters, plus I have to go over to Kings Bromley as well so tomorrow is going to be out by the look of it.
That looks like my chances of seeing it have gone as next weekend I am on the Farnes, Northumberland, and the week after I am at Thursley with the WAB meet.
