| | | Confusion, confusion Need help IDing this bird please. Is it a juvenile female House Sparrow or juvenile Dunnock?
I don't have any trouble identifying male House Sparrows but when it comes down to the females I can never quite make my mind up between House Sparrow or Dunnock. Are there any 'give aways' to tell them apart or is it just practice?
Cheers,

| | | Re: Confusion, confusion Surely Dunnocks have a much more slender bill? I would go for House Sparrow.

I'm pretty sure it is a female house sparrow.

| | | Re: Confusion, confusion I would say house sparrow, I'm not an expert by any means and may be totally wrong on this but the shape of the beak gives it away to me.

| | | Re: Confusion, confusion I would think the bill is too thick, chunky for a dunnock. So, it's some sort of sparrow! A good clue is what other individuals are around - if you have house sparrows (or whatever) then it's likely to be one of them .... |

| | | Re: Confusion, confusion Nice photo, and it's a House Sparrow, the beak is too stubby to be a Dunnock. A Dunnocks beak is much slimmer, it's also got the House sparrow markings on the wing.
