| | | Marvellous Minsmere Had the most wonderful trip to Minsmere last Monday evening and Tuesday morning. It really is a fantastic place. I managed to photograph six bird species for the first time (barnacle goose, bittern, shoveler, reed and sedge warblers and whitethroat) and also got better shots than I've managed before of several more including avocet and marsh harrier.
Speaking of which, I managed to get this sequence showing a male marsh harrier passing prey to his mate. The RSPB volunteer guide explained that the female has sole duty of incubating the eggs and looking after the young but the male hunts for her and brings food back. Here he is having just caught something (I think it's a coot or moorhen chick or possible a little grebe)…
He flies up over the nest where the female is waiting…
She comes up to meet him and take the prey from him…
Then returns to the nest…
All the above were quite distant shots and are fairly heavily cropped. I've uploaded my best two marsh harrier shots to the Gallery, and will add some of the other species later on too, as well as a mushroom that I'm hoping Fungi John can help me identify.

| | | Re: Marvellous Minsmere Thanks Mrs Fish! This was only my second visit and I can't wait to go back...
Being there at sunset and again at dawn was definitely worth it in spite of the discomfort of sleeping in the car.

The male Marsh Harrier at Leighton Moss is apparently keeping two females supplied with food. He's going to be busy soon.
