| | | Cuckoo at last About time too! I opened my bedroom window this morning to hear the very clear sounds of a cuckoo nearby. Someone want to tell it that spring started ages ago? I'd given up on hearing one this season! |

| | | Re: Cuckoo at last We have just returned from a week in the Burren, Ireland where we heard a lot of Cuckoos, and this time SAW three. The males are obvious as they call "cuckoo" but I have never seen a female before. We spotted this one because a Meadow Pipit was attacking it. If you study the picture you will see, next to her, the Meadow Pipits egg that the female Cuckoo must have just removed from the nest before laying her own.
I have greatly enlarged the picture as I was a field's width away at the time and had no time to do anything other than take a quick hand-held shot. Sorry its not up to the specialist standards of this forum but I thought the scene was so unusual that I should post it for your curiosity. |

| | | Re: Cuckoo at last Nice picture. I don't think I have ever seen one, never mind photographed one.
But I did hear one earlier this evening while walking the dogs.

| | | Re: Cuckoo at last There seemed to be constant Cuckoo-ing at my local patch this morning.
I saw at least 2 and maybe 5 .... it was difficult to judge with all the activity.
One bird flew directly towards a hide that I was in but then decided it would be better to perch just outside .... excellent view .

| | | Re: Cuckoo at last I've never seen a cuckoo but I did have an intersting conversation with my 8 yr old daughter this morning about the way that cuckoos use other birds nests for their young. She was a little sad but I explained that it was nature. What amazes me is that from the moment they're born the instinct is there. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
