Re: What on earth is this bird??

My first thought was yellowhammer, but after enlarging the pic I don't think so. It must be an escape, possibly a canary?

Erm... I don't know if this is just me, but look at Ollie's avatar. It looks strangely similar, appart from his avatar seems to have a little more brown on it's head. Just a thought!!

No it's not. A golden oriole is starling-sized, that thing's the same size as the dunnock in the background. It's definitely a finch of some sort.

Re: What on earth is this bird??

I don't think it's a Golden Orilole, but I'm sure it's not a Yellowhammer, the colouring on the birds back is wrong for a Yellowhammer. On size alone I would say a Finch possibly an escapee.

Re: What on earth is this bird??

Dunno why eeyore should be so sure that its a golden oriole! Size, head and beak shape and markings are all wrong. Golden oriole is blackbird size. In the Scillies I once saw a thrush that had been sipping nectar from some exotic flowers in Tresco gardens and got his head covered in yellow pollen. That wasn't a golden oriole either

Compare the little yellow headed finch with this: The RSPB: Golden oriole

Re: What on earth is this bird??

How about some sort of weaver, they're quite common escapes from aviaries.
