Sawflies emerge!

For the last few weeks I have been keeping a pair of Rose Sawfly - Arge pagana in a jar on my desk. One of them successfully made a cocoon, whilst the other failed slightly and ended up going into metamorphosis out in the open.
The one that cocooned emerged at 11am on the 9th August. After walking around for a while it attempted some short and clumsy flights. In flight it sounded like a wasp. When airborne it flew over to the rose bush where it was born. Here it settled for a few hours and rubbed its wings with its hind legs. It also touched its abdomen on the rose stems before moving on and repeating the process. This might have been to test how hard it was to cut the stem with its saw like ovipositor.
The other sawfly is just starting to gain its black and yellow colouring but has not yet woken up.
