Centipede photography
Posted 25-07-2009 at 10:55 AM by wildlifepilgrim
At the moment I am involved in the identification of species at a meadow within the grounds of a school. We wanted to get a photo of everything so that the kids could go try and find what we "know" is there (and maybe help protect the site). The big problem was trying to photograph the centipedes.
1) They don't like light and so run when disturbed
2) They run fast!
Unfortunately, though I hate bottling wild animals the only way we could do it was to trap one in a Petri dish. The results are ok, but even in the dish it was hard to photograph. With the lid on, the photos are a bit smudgy and with the lid off the centipede would make a high speed dash for freedom.

Its fangs are absolutely formidable. I wonder what is a centipede bite like? Has anybody been bitten by one of these?
I've submitted them to the Gallery but don't hold out much hope as you can see the Petri dish in all the shots.

| | We saw some really big ones in Cyprus and they can run fast too! Sometimes, if you lift something up very carefully, they might stay still just for a little while...... and then they shoot off just as you're about to take your pic. Doh! |
