Ramblings of one who can't tell one LBJ from the next.....
Just when you think it's all over......

It was another sunny day yesterday so downed tools and threw photo stuff into car with the dogs and headed off to LHF. Never seen it so busy along the drove - lorries, vans, tractors..... the dust was billowing up from behind them. The grain harvest was in full swing and generating even more dust...... and noise.
To add to the general mayhem, it was also day 1 of the wildfowling season and a few local worthies were out on the fields next to the RSPB reserve waiting for the evening flights on their return to the lakes and waterways. Can't help feeling a certain conflict of interests is happening there....
The sun seemed to drop like a stone - a golden evening became dark and still all we had seen was a single pigeon. A flock of geese flew noisily past, heading away towards Redmere.... and a lone duck quacked... I mentally told it to sit tight and keep its head down!!
Sat in relative peace as the light faded, and we decided that we could mark the evening down as a bit of a failure, then I spotted a flash of white and along the side of the stream came this little gem....

He (or she - not too good on owl genders) flew up onto a way marker about 15 ft away and just sat and stared at us for ages, even when I carefully picked up the camera and took some photos. Then he flew towards us, so low that we expected him to land on the bonnet - circled the back of the truck and back to his perch. He did a second swoop over and round, passing within arm's length of the window before drifting gently away over the field.
What a perfect end to the evening.
