I made a visit to one of my favourite summer haunts today, mainly to try and get some photographs of Large Heath. On arrival it was very warm, but about 50% cloud cover, but after an hour or two it began to break. My first notable sightings where the above mentioned Large Heaths which where out in very good numbers, with me seeing a minimum of 112 insects,a massive count and the most i have seen in 6 years of visits.Shortly after seeing my first Large Heaths,i came across a young buck Roe Deer, which made a quick exit once he saw this big ugly bloke walking towards him.My next highlight of the walk was a mature male Common Hawker, watched patrolling his watery territory, occasionally being harrassed by some very aggressive Four-spot Chasers,as he ventured into the territories. In all,i saw 5 Common Hawkers,4 males and 1 female,a decent count,as they are only just coming on the wing.By now it was getting very warm and i carried on my walk seeing another male Roe Deer and my first Heather Bug.I eventually made it back to the car after 4 hours and had some great sightings in the bag and look forward to my next visit..
