A blog by Paul Rigg mainly about the wildlife seen around Kiveton Park near Sheffield especially Kiveton Woodlands the site of the old Kiveton Pit. Over the last couple of years it has had worked carried out by the Forestry Commission and also by British Waterways (to create Kiveton Waters fishing ponds). I am also a member of SK58 birders watching birds in the 10km square of SK58
(http://www.sk58birders.com/). The blog will also talk about wildlife seen on trips to other places.
I am just getting into filming wildlife and these attempts can be seen on http://uk.youtube.com/user/paulrigg99.

A walk along Chesterfield Canal (21 Nov 2008)
Decided to have a walk along Chesterfield Canal from Kiveton Station to Tommy Flocktons. Got a great view of male Kestrel flying low over the canal heading towards Tommy Flocktons ( a small area of marsh and horse grazing land - often produces waders and wildfowl). Moorhens quite active on and around the canal as where blackbirds. Caught a quick glance of what looked like a green woodpecker but couldn't see it in the trees at the side of the canal. Whilst stood looking for the green woodpecker a rabbit ran through a clearing in the woods. Arrived at Tommy Flocktons to the sight of approx 100 starlings swooping and diving. The trees at the side contained Fieldfare and Goldfinch. Looking up onto the overhead wires a male kestrel was looking down for his next meal (was this the same bird as before?). The Kestrel then took flight to be joined by another Kestrel (?female). Carried onto the fishing ponds to see if Cormorant from yesterday still evident but no sight.

| | Hi Riggy, A bit late responding but what the hell! I live over in North Anston and often do the Anston Stones walk and have thought about crossing the A57 and doing the Chesterfield Canal walk. From your blog it certainly looks worthwhile! Thanks! |
