Top Poster: glsammy (15,068) | | Welcome to our newest member, rickyhobson | | A blog by Paul Rigg mainly about the wildlife seen around Kiveton Park near Sheffield especially Kiveton Woodlands the site of the old Kiveton Pit. Over the last couple of years it has had worked carried out by the Forestry Commission and also by British Waterways (to create Kiveton Waters fishing ponds). I am also a member of SK58 birders watching birds in the 10km square of SK58
( http://www.sk58birders.com/). The blog will also talk about wildlife seen on trips to other places.
I am just getting into filming wildlife and these attempts can be seen on http://uk.youtube.com/user/paulrigg99. | Posted 04-12-2008 at 07:17 AM by riggy On the 3 December 2008 I went on a team building exercise with a group of fellow 3rd year student nurses from Sheffield University. Meeting at the cafe at Grindleford station. If you are ever out in the peak district this is a place to visit for a fry up pre walk or chip butties after! Tea sold by the pint pot!. The estate in places had a slim layer of snow making it picture perfect. Whilst the walk produced little in the way of wildlife (40 student nurses are not exactly stealth like) walking with... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 04-12-2008 at 06:59 AM by riggy Met a friend at Rother Valley Country Park it was a cold frosty morning with the mist lingering in places. The majority of the geese where still up on the hills surrounding the park. Large numbers of ducks on the lake including Mallard, Pochard, Gadwell, Tufted, a pair of Goosander, a Goldeneye and a Shelduck
Large numbers of Lapwings that kept taking of and flying over the lake.... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 24-11-2008 at 06:47 AM by riggy After a morning spent in Meadowhell and a rather nice lamb dinner at home decided to take Fizz for a walk around Kiveton Woodlands. The sun was shining but it was a bit cold in the wind. The little bit of snow from the morning had gone. The first sight was a lovely female bullfinch then a Kestrel. Walking through a wooded area a mixed flock of Fieldfare and Redwing. After leaving the wood a pair of Cormorants flew over heading towards the fishing ponds. The rest of the walk produced little in the... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 22-11-2008 at 03:43 PM by riggy Updated 22-11-2008 at 06:17 PM by riggy Decided to have a walk along Chesterfield Canal from Kiveton Station to Tommy Flocktons. Got a great view of male Kestrel flying low over the canal heading towards Tommy Flocktons ( a small area of marsh and horse grazing land - often produces waders and wildfowl). Moorhens quite active on and around the canal as where blackbirds. Caught a quick glance of what looked like a green woodpecker but couldn't see it in the trees at the side of the canal. Whilst stood looking for the green woodpecker a... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 1
| | Posted 20-11-2008 at 09:40 PM by riggy A very windy day met me an Fizz upon our arrival to Kiveton Woodlands. The pond produced coots and mallards. Circling above were 3 Blackheaded Gulls. Walking away from the pond I saw 2 black shapes circling over the lakes - cormorants - they then headed back towards Kiveton Park (perhaps towards the ponds on Axle Lane). The rest of the walk produced blue tits and Kestrels. Returning to the lake a kestrel was hovering close to the path I was walking on. Watching this till it flew off I then saw another... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
