Welcome to the Wild About Britain forums | | | | I already have my own blog (accessible from my web site) which describes the walks that I go on - I generally walk 12-15 miles, two or three times a week, all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the southern part of Oxfordshire. Here on my WAB blog I will just comment on the wildlife that I see on my walks. I love being out in the countryside and enjoy seeing all types of wildlife, but I am especially interested in birds and wildflowers. | I walked for about three and a half hours this morning, a circular walk clockwise from Pitstone Hill, on the borders of Bucks and Herts. I first walked uphill into part of the Ashridge estate, then came downhill again before going back up into the beech woods. Close to the Bridgewater Monument I saw about three large Fallow bucks, partly hidden by holly bushes. ... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | I've just got back from a short break in North Norfolk, only the second time this year that I've really been bird watching.
On Wednesday afternoon I visited the RSPB's Titchwell Marsh reserve. I saw several types of duck (Shoveller, Shellduck, Wigeon, Mallard, Teal, Pintail) and wader (Ruff, Lapwing, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Ringed Plover, Turnstone, Sanderling, Dunlin, Avocet) but the highlights were Med Gull and Barn Owl.
On Thursday morning I started at Salthouse... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 2
| | | I didn't sleep well last night and overslept by 30 minutes this morning, so I changed my plans and instead of driving for an hour to do a walk in Oxfordshire, I did a local walk round Ashridge and Ivinghoe Beacon. I started from the monument at Ashridge and walked in an anti-clockwise direction - I was generally following the route of the Ashridge Estate Boundary Trail, but cut it short in a few places so that I walked about 12 miles rather than the full 16.
Another cold day, but... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | Today I did a shorter walk than usual, which only took 3.5 hours. I started at Studham Common, then took a bridleway that crosses the wide Gade Valley to reach Hudnall, before following a path to Little Gaddesden. From there I entered the delightful woods of the Ashridge Estate (National Trust), and followed a path through Golden Valley, a green swathe of grass along a valley bottom with woods either side (it was used for a few scenes in the BBC's wonderful 'Cranford' that ends tomorrow night -... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 2
| | | Yesterday (13/12/07) I did a local walk, starting at Dunstable Downs. I walked to Whipsnade, passing the Tree Cathedral and the Zoo, and on to Studham, where I walked along the top of the common. I then made my way to Roe End and on to Markyate. I returned through Kensworth and Kensworth Church End, passing the enormous Kensworth Quarry, back to the Downs.
I saw several Redwings in different places, and had a glimpse of a fox between Studham and Roe End. A green woodpecker put in... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
