Welcome to the Wild About Britain forums | | | | I already have my own blog (accessible from my web site) which describes the walks that I go on - I generally walk 12-15 miles, two or three times a week, all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the southern part of Oxfordshire. Here on my WAB blog I will just comment on the wildlife that I see on my walks. I love being out in the countryside and enjoy seeing all types of wildlife, but I am especially interested in birds and wildflowers. |
Today I did some local bird watching, the first time in over a year I think! I started at College Lake, the BB&O Wildlife Trust reserve near Tring. I saw Shoveler, Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Great Crested Grebe, Black-headed Gulls, Cormorants, a Green Woodpecker and a Bullfinch. ... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | A 4-hour circular walk from Buckland Common (near Tring) today, through Chartridge and Cholesbury (where I walked round Cholesbury Camp, an Iron Age hill fort). A walk just for the sake of the exercise, really - it was grey and misty, limiting visibility to 50 yards at times. I hoped the mist would clear, but it didn't, if anything it got worse. Shame as there were some nice views when I did this walk in the opposite direction a few weeks ago.
Consequently I didn't think there'd be... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | Shorter walk than usual today, only took about three and a half hours. An anti-clockwise circular route south from Stoke Row in the Oxfordshire Chilterns. Checkendon was the only other village I touched on, the second half of the walk was almost entirely on bridleways, mainly through woods. I managed to get lost, and ended up taking a different route back into Stoke Row than the one I'd planned.
Saw a couple of buzzards. Only saw Red Kites in a couple of places and then again when... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | A four and a half hour circular walk in the Oxfordshire part of the Chilterns today. Started in Stoke Row, walked north to Nettlebed, then NW almost to Park Corner, then SW to Nuffield (where there is a very ancient church). I then followed the ancient earthwork of Grim's Ditch westward for a couple of miles, before heading south to Hailey and then east all the way back to Stoke Row.
Lots of Red Kites just about everywhere today, but all my photos were very disappointing - I really... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | A four hour walk today, starting from Wendover Woods about 9.40. Saw some Jays as I walked back along the drive through the woods, then got a glimpse of a Muntjac deer as I passed the mountain biking centre on Aston Hill. Went downhill through the woods, across a broad valley and then uphill quite steeply through more woods to Hastoe (highest village in Hertfordshire). Went through part of Tring Park to reach Wigginton. Turned round there and came back a diferent way, following the course of an... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
