Top Poster: glsammy (14,775) | | Welcome to our newest member, Freddi | | I already have my own blog (accessible from my web site) which describes the walks that I go on - I generally walk 12-15 miles, two or three times a week, all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the southern part of Oxfordshire. Here on my WAB blog I will just comment on the wildlife that I see on my walks. I love being out in the countryside and enjoy seeing all types of wildlife, but I am especially interested in birds and wildflowers. | Ringlet
This afternoon I had a short walk at Bison Hill, a steep area of chalk downland that is so-called because Whipsnade Zoo has a paddock containing American Bison (or Buffalo) on one side of the hill.
Immediately above the car park is a small level area of grass where I found numerous Pyramidal Orchids - I expected to see them, as they were here last year. I also saw some... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0

I went back to the reserve at Totternhoe Quarry again this afternoon. I found no less than 5 Man Orchids, but all were past there best. When I first went I found just one, but found four the next time I went. As I discovered today, the one on its own is just a few feet from the other four. On the opposite side of the track were a couple of Bee Orchids. ... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0

This afternoon I visited the nature reserve in the old chalk quarries at Totternhoe, Beds., a few miles from where I live. I was really looking for wildflowers, but hoped to see some birds and butterflies as well.
I was lucky enough to see a Man Orchid - I know they are found at Totternhoe, but this was the first time I'd managed to spot one. The much more common Common... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0

I had a brilliant walk today, 12.5 miles through probably my favourite part of the Chilterns - Coombe Hill, Whiteleaf Hill, Parslow's Hillock, Great Hampden, Little Hampden, Dunsmore, back to Coombe Hill.
Lots of wildflowers - Greater Stitchwort, Bluebells, Yellow Archangel, Yellow Pimpernel, Garlic Mustard, Herb Robert, Wood Speedwell, Germander Speedwell, Common... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | I apologise for not posting anything here for a while - my excuses are I've been a bit busy and that I've had PC problems (still ongoing ).
I'm currently walking round in circles! That is to say I'm doing a series of circular walks. Having walked many long-distance paths within my area over the last 2-3 years, I have spent about six months planning and devising my own unofficial long-distance path. I've called it the Chiltern Chain Walk, and it consists of 20 12-mile circular... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
