I already have my own blog (accessible from my web site) which describes the walks that I go on - I generally walk 12-15 miles, two or three times a week, all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the southern part of Oxfordshire. Here on my WAB blog I will just comment on the wildlife that I see on my walks. I love being out in the countryside and enjoy seeing all types of wildlife, but I am especially interested in birds and wildflowers.
Great Spotted Woodpecker

This afternoon, about 3.40pm or so, I saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker on one of the feeders on the apple tree in the back garden. I think it was a juvenile, as I couldn't spot any red on its head at all.
We used to get these birds on the feeders fairly regularly. Then about six months some new people moved in next-door-but-one, and started putting out bird food in their garden. The woodpeckers then seemed to stop coming to our garden - the new people's garden is closer to the tall trees around a farm where the woodpeckers normally reside. I'll keep a look-out to see if the GSW's will start visiting us regularly again - they're always a treat to see.
I often hear Green Woodpeckers about too, and sometimes see them in the paddock that the garden backs onto. They have been in the garden very occasionally, though there is no longer a lawn for them to feed on. We did once have both Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers on the apple tree at the same time.
