I already have my own blog (accessible from my web site) which describes the walks that I go on - I generally walk 12-15 miles, two or three times a week, all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the southern part of Oxfordshire. Here on my WAB blog I will just comment on the wildlife that I see on my walks. I love being out in the countryside and enjoy seeing all types of wildlife, but I am especially interested in birds and wildflowers.
Totternhoe Quarry
This afternoon I visited the nature reserve in the old chalk quarries at Totternhoe, Beds., a few miles from where I live. I was really looking for wildflowers, but hoped to see some birds and butterflies as well.
I was lucky enough to see a Man Orchid - I know they are found at Totternhoe, but this was the first time I'd managed to spot one. The much more common Common Mouse-ear was another new flower for me. There was a lot of Sainfoin, and I saw my first Clustered Bellflower of the year.
I managed to photo a Common Whitethroat, and heard but didn't see a Turtle Dove, something else for which the site is noted.
On the Butterfly Front, I saw several Speckled Woods and a Small Blue.
