Welcome to the Wild About Britain forums | | | | | Posted 08-05-2008 at 05:07 PM by nutmeg This afternoon I spotted a 7-spot ladybird anchored by a cocoon - probably of the parasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae, a braconid wasp. The larvae of the wasp immobilise the ladybird and emerge to spin a cocoon between its legs. The unfortunate ladybird is still alive but paralysed, and will either starve or die from infection.
Unfortunately, the ladybird... | Officer of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 06-05-2008 at 07:10 PM by nutmeg Updated 06-05-2008 at 07:56 PM by nutmeg I was able to spend some time in the garden this afternoon after I returned from work. The lovely warm sunshine has brought out a few butterflies. Speckled wood, holly blue and orange tip were seen here for the first time this year. | Officer of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 22-04-2008 at 08:29 PM by nutmeg I was out mowing the grass in the front garden, when I spotted the small Adonis' ladybird Hippodamia variegata. I've found it in the same spot before, but only rarely. | Officer of the Wild Empire | | Comments 1
| | Posted 21-04-2008 at 07:13 PM by nutmeg I saw my first swallow of the year on 13 April at Whisby Nature Park, Lincs. This afternoon I saw the first of the year over my garden. Don't know if they were there earlier - the weather hasn't inspired me to spend much time outside.
I also noticed a pair of great tits building a nest in the soffit boards over my dining room extension. | Officer of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 06-04-2008 at 03:48 PM by nutmeg I've seen a larch ladybird in the garden once before - in October 2007. Today I was examining my weeping silver birch for insects and spotted one on it. I was quite surprised and very pleased
Perhaps they are commoner here... | Officer of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
