National Moth Night 2009 - Night 2

A much better night last night than the previous night, thanks to some cloud retaining the warmth of the day. I trapped in the garden again and although numbers weren't high, I had a nice selection of moths including some new for the garden.

Red Underwing (nfg)
Large Yellow Underwing
Lesser Yellow Underwing x5
Snout x2
Silver Y
Common Marbled Carpet x2
Setaceous Hebrew Character x3
Common Wainscot
Large Wainscot
Canary-shouldered...

National Moth Night 2009

I put my 125W MV Robinson trap out last night between 20.00 - 00.30. The weather was clear and cool.

Very few moths ended up in the trap:

Large Yellow Underwing
Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing
2 Setaceous Hebrew Character
2 Light Brown Apple Moth

Plus two new garden records:

First brimstone butterfly of the year

A brimstone butterfly spent some time today fluttering around the garden. I spent some time pursuing it with my camera... futilely!

A Bombus terrestris queen and quite a few honey bees visited the crocuses - and I managed to photograph these

First butterfly of the year

The warmer weather over the weekend brought out a few insects in the garden - including a Peacock butterfly, several honey bees, more than a dozen 7-spot ladybirds, an ant damsel bug and a shield bug (Troilus luridus).

Bullfinches in the garden!

I was looking out of my bedroom window this morning when I saw a pair of bullfinches feeding on the buds of an ornamental prunus. I haven't seen any bullfinches in the garden for a number of years, so was extremely pleased to see these .
