Top Poster: glsammy (14,777) | | Welcome to our newest member, Penali18 | | | Posted 26-12-2008 at 10:16 AM by leifus May at last (!) beginning with wood sorrel and common solomon’s-seal and a start to my ‘Barn Owl Diary 2008’ which didn’t get very far in the end unfortunately due to lack of time, but will be better next year! I did see it briefly on the 2nd, hunting in the Pleasure Field next to the road. I went out and waited for a while to see it fly into the nest with prey but I didn’t see it come out again. I did however get a couple of half-decent pictures. On the 3rd I cycled my 900th mile on the way to... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 26-12-2008 at 10:15 AM by leifus The beginning of April brought a sudden stream of flowers including the first greater stitchwort, honesty in the garden, hedgerow crane’s-bill, yellow archangel, wild strawberry, toothwort and some yellow corydalis in Back Drove. On the 7th I made my first journey of the year down to Blackmoor Copse to see the willow tits and fallow deer, both of which were in good numbers. The next day I saw a little owl just outside our house when we started our journey down to Portsmouth for a day where I saw... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 26-12-2008 at 10:14 AM by leifus Before we new it, it was March….already…..and the first flowers were starting to appear. The previous August Uncle Michael had given me a digital camera and it has been so fun using it this year as a way of recording all the wildlife I have seen and on the 1st I photographed my first flower: the lesser celandine, having finally worked out how to use the macro. The next day I saw a goldcrest in the garden before church – the first I’ve seen here. On the 18th I discovered Wild About Britain on the... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 26-12-2008 at 10:13 AM by leifus Moving on and into February, after a break without much going on, it was nice to see sika deer at Broughton Down on a very bleak day (10/2/08). Then, on the 18th it was back to Keyhaven. There were the usual ducks and another long list of waders including a massive flock of golden plover and more grey plovers, as well as a flock of snipe. The next surprise was two more water rail which was incredible bringing my water rail total for this year to 4 which is amazing! Yet this was not the highlight... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 26-12-2008 at 10:11 AM by leifus Birds, insects, flowers and fungi. It has been a long, exciting year with plenty of trips out into the wild providing countless new species for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and very much look forward to next year!!
It all started back in January (funnily enough!) when we were on the Isle of Wight with Granny and Grandad. Dad and I headed down to the seafront on New Years Day and clocked up 34 species of bird on the new year list. We had hoped to see the water rail (that... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
