Matley Bog, New Forest
Posted 27-08-2008 at 08:54 AM by leifus
Matley Bog looked like a heath from the car park, but was actually very boggy!! I was looking for bog orchids and we were searching for 45 minutes before I found 13 of them, growing on the Sphagnum moss in the bog. The tallest was only 8cm, but most of them were only 3cm. It isn't very easy searching a massive bog for something so small and dull-coloured, but definately worth it in the end!! I also found a patch of lesser bladderwort (easily distinguishable from its greater cousin because of its size) and lots of great sundew and white-beak sedge. I disturbed a keeled skimmer in the heather just beforw I found the bog orchids.
