Yorkshire - Bolton Abbey/Strid Wood
Posted 05-08-2008 at 09:52 AM by leifus
Much better weather today! - even some sunshine! Last night's rain meant that the river was close to flooding.
Lots of interesting woodland flowers on show including giant and nettle-leaved bellflowers, enchanter's nightshade, welsh poppy, wall lettuce and small teasel. By the river and adjoining streams I found water and corn mints, wild angelica, common valerian, yellow loosestrife, water-cress, water forget-me-nots, crosswort and a few monkeyflowers. In the meadows harebells were the "main attraction", but also betony, eyebright, burnet saxifrage, common restharrow, great burnet and meadow crane's-bill.
Unfortunately it wasn't hot enough for butterflies but I managed a couple of small skippers and some green-veined whites.
A couple of grey wagtails were patrolling up and down the river while the sand martins swooped around us, snapping up insects.
