Bentley Wood
Bentley Wood is in Wiltshire and is a place of pilgramage for butterfly lovers. The sun was out and the temperatures were reaching a good 25 degrees.
I managed 17 different butterflies including one of the wood's highlights, the purple emperor. I also saw a couple of white-letter hairstreaks, silver-washed fritillaries, comma, common blue, brimstone, peacock, red admiral, small and large skippers and large and green-veined whites, to name a few.
A few dragonflies around this morning such as southern hawkers, an emperor, common darters and large red, common blue and azure damselflies.
Plenty of flowers out at the moment, most notably the broad-leaved helleborines which are just starting to flower. Also, the first of the devil's-bit scabious, giant bellflower, betony, common toadflax, vervain, common gromwell, marjoram, corn and water mint, common and lesser centaury and hoary willowherb.
Other things worth mentioning comprise a slow worm sunning itself on the path and a buzzard that flew across the path in front of me.
Overall, then I think that...
BUTTERFLY OF THE DAY: Purple Emperor - flew around the treetops before settling on the trunk
DRAGONFLY OF THE DAY: Southern Hawker - I got some great up close images
FLOWER OF THE DAY: Broad-leaved Helleborine
Bentley Wood, Wiltshire - well worth a visit especially in July when the purple emperors are out
