Top Poster: glsammy (15,067) | | Welcome to our newest member, rickyhobson | | When Bill Oddy did Springwatch he talked about "getting to know your patch" and the advantages of regularly watching it.
I now have two patches, the back garden of the house , and a second alongside a route I hope to walk more regularly now with lengthening days..
In my LJ blog "Rhubarb patch" I reflected: "It recently occurred to me that ...rhubarb leaves are poisonous, rhubarb stems are sour and especially in damp conditions the foot of a rhubarb stem is likely to be slimy.....
in this I will try not to be posionous, sour or slimy! Uncategorized Entries with no category | | ....not sure what's happening, only that it is taking longer to get round my regular route.
Tonight there were swifts and swallows and house martins to see: the best part of watching them is working out where each of them will be and I am beginning to know even though from time to time I am being pleasantly surprised.
Last year there was a fairly clear division between the house martins area and the swallows. This year there appear to fewer swallows, more martins and their areas have... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | We had Sunday to Friday away and despite some indifferent weather it was a good week, a very neccessary break for MOH and a delight for me.We managed a trip to Anglesey and several visits to Conwy RSPB and towards the end I discovered how easy it was to do a two hour walk beside the coast before breakfast.
I managed to list fifty six species in a week that was not entirely devoted to birding. | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | Had the day to myself and determined to do one of my walks. The morning was dry but promised better so I put it off until the afternoon and then it rained. This evening there was a little blue sky and the sun was out, a slight breeze and I had left time to go to the top gate and back before dark....our roads are not the best lit in the world and as a driver I have often "called" invisible pedestrians. I usually wear black........
So half an hour each way: I still think the greatest... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | | Frustrating week recovering from a Gastric bug that has seen me do three short walks and nothing more. Didn't reckon I would have coped with a group outing to Saltholme on Saturday and cried off: very glad I did. I would not have lasted out the thirteen and a half hour trip even if I would have ticked Glossy Ibis and shared in a group sighting of sixty species.
Did go out tonight after tea...and it started to rain almost immediately. Didn't take long to reach the pond. There was a wonderful... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 1
| | | I think in the last couple of years there have been moments when I have been aware of Goldcrests. A friend tells me he has them visiting his garden regularly, its just they are never there when I am there. On a birding trip a small bird silhouettes on branches against the setting sun and one of my companions identifies it from song as a goldcrest so I've seen one but not seen one.
On holiday in France a small bird again silhouettes before diving into a bush not to be seen again and from its... | Member of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
