For as long as I can remember I've had a love of natural history, especially birds.
So many of the things we see, the experiences we taste, are but a fleeting moment, there to be treasured, but all too often flying away to rest only in our memories. I'm trying to improve my photography so that it too can try and capture some of those moments. As I look at the WAB gallery, I'll have to let my admiration lead to aspiration, not desparation. In the meantime, I can jot down a few experiences and thoughts by way of a blog - nothing too profound, just what it says on the tin... my miscellaneous musings. Thanks for taking the time to have a look and please feel free to leave any comments.

A murder in suburbia?
Posted 27-06-2009 at 11:27 PM by Jonners
OK, that might be pushing it a bit on both counts, but I was somewhat surprised late yesterday afternoon to see a family of seven carrion crows lined up on the fence at the bottom of my nextdoor neighbour's garden. We're not really suburbia here, being literally a stone's throw from a farmer's field, but I was still surprised by their presence, not to mention the noise which had caught my attention in the first place!
I took the boys to see the nightjars, which duly performed again tonight, along with a couple of woodcock, but we couldn't stay too late. No photos this time, but I am keen to try again and take Julia too.
This morning our youngest two spotted a giant puffball growing in someone's front garden.
They wondered about just lifting it, but I followed best protocol and asked the owner, who was happy to let us take it, but was concerned that we were absolutely sure it would be alright to eat it. Lunch then consisted of bacon, eggs, fried bread and fried puffball
.
This afternoon we visited Banham Zoo as a birthday treat for our youngest. A special open evening hosted by Friends of Banham Zoo meant we didn't leave to come home until after nine, but we were rewarded with a lovely Barn Owl, who left his vantage point atop a telegraph pole to go hunting over the nearby fields. For all the education and closeness to birds and animals that a zoo offers, you can't beat seeing them wild and free in their natural habitat.
