Welcome to the Wild About Britain forums | | | | | Posted 03-02-2008 at 03:53 PM by GuyF Haven't been out anywhere today but the birds in and around the garden have been great.
Most exciting was a large influx of Siskins. I've had a group of 7 for the last couple of days, but today there was a flock of atleast 23 birds, and large groups were visiting the seed feeders. Other finch numbers have been good too, with about 15 Goldfinches, 5 Greenfinches and 6 Chaffinches. 6 Long-tailed Tits visited the feeders and there was a Goldcrest in the hedge infront of the house. There was... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 2
| | Posted 27-01-2008 at 06:33 PM by GuyF Haven't posted anything for a while, but then I haven't been up to very much really! A few weekends back in the Studland area I saw 3 Eiders, the first time I'd seen them in Poole Harbour, as well as 4 Black-necked Grebes, 1 Great Northern Diver and some large groups of displaying Goldeneye. Haven't had too much going on in the garden but a couple of Sparrowhawk visits and a Bullfinch have been good to see. Yesterday I spent a short time at Keyhaven Marshes where there were lots of Brent Geese as... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 01-01-2008 at 07:17 PM by GuyF I had a good start to 2008 with a nice walk at Hartland Moor heading towards the hide at Middlebere. Along the path in the hedgerows there were a few Goldcrests as well as the usual commoner birds. When I arrived at the hide there was a large flock of Lapwings catching the light nicely, showing their metallic green backs. There were a couple of Avocet mixed in with them, and a larger group further down the inlet. Also a few Shelduck, Teal and Little Egrets around. A male Sparrowhawk flew in and... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 1
| | Posted 31-12-2007 at 07:04 PM by GuyF Had a pretty successful days birdwatching over in the Portland area today. First stopped at Ferrybridge, as usual there were good numbers of Mediterranean Gulls amongst the Black-headed Gulls. On the fleet lagoon in the distance there was a large group of Mergansers with a few Goldeneye and Little Grebes. From the top of Chesil Beach looking out to sea I could see the group of Scoter that has been reported, however because of the distance I had no chance of picking out any of the Velvet Scoter that... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 2
| | Posted 30-12-2007 at 01:06 PM by GuyF Got out for the first time in ages yesterday and headed to Studland. First I did a nice walk along Rempstone Ride, I didn't see too much wildlife there but it definetely looks good for invertebrates in the summer, apparently it's home to some real rarities. I did see some flocks of Curlew in the wet fields, a few Mistle Thrush and a group of Long-tailed Tits. Out in Poole Harbour I could see a Goldeneye and a couple of Merganser, also some Wigeon and lots of Shelduck and Brent Geese resting in the... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 2
