Welcome to the Wild About Britain forums | | | | | Posted 21-02-2008 at 04:22 PM by GuyF Updated 21-02-2008 at 08:02 PM by GuyF (Added a photo) Went to Wareham Forest again today looking for the Great Grey Shrike, and once again I failed!
There were lots of other nice birds around though, so I can't complain. Along the first path, a Little Egret flew up from beside the stream and landed in a tree. Out on the heath a heard, and then saw, a Dartford Warbler singing from a spike of gorse. I continued along the path and at the bottom, in a mossy area, there were 2 Woodlarks. I sat down and watched them for a while, occasionally one would... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 4
| | Posted 19-02-2008 at 06:15 PM by GuyF This afternoon I walked in Wareham Forest. I was really hoping to see the Great Grey Shrike which is overwintering there but unfortunately I failed, however I did have some good sightings.
There were a few Meadow Pipits flying up out of the heather on the way down to the ponds, and as I reached a pond which has Raft Spiders in the summer I heard some birds calling in the pines behind me. I walked back and saw a few birds flitting in the tops of the trees, most were Siskins but there was a... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 18-02-2008 at 06:02 PM by GuyF I found out after I'd finished writing that I can only include 4 images, so I've put links to the other shots if anyones interested.
Had a really nice visit to the Slimbridge WWT reserve yesterday, it's been years since I last visited and it was very nice to get back there!
All the captive birds were looking very nice in their winter plumage, but they're not British so I'll have to forget about them for the moment. Among the exotic ducks and geese were loads of Moorhens... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 10-02-2008 at 05:58 PM by GuyF The Brambling hasn't shown up again unfortunately, but the Siskins are still around which is nice. As the weather was so nice today I decided to try and get some better Siskin shots, but I didn't have much success as they stayed high up in the birches.
A lot of Great-spotted Woodpecker activity at the moment, they're drumming a lot and I keep seeing groups chasing each other over the garden. Also saw a Green Woodpecker fly over this morning.
A Grey Wagtail was on the roof earlier in... | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 0
| | Posted 06-02-2008 at 09:45 PM by GuyF Still having pretty good numbers of Siskins visiting, probably about 10 birds, but today I had another exciting winter visitor, a Brambling. I always like seeing these beautiful finches, and this is only the second time I've seen one in the garden, and it's been quite a while since I saw my last one anywhere!
I managed this terrible shot of the Brambling, my excuse is that it was early in the morning and the light was very poor. | Commander of the Wild Empire | | Comments 4
