Had a good days birdwatching in the Weymouth area today, despite the weather. First stopped off at Radipole. From the visitor centre there were 3 Mediterranean Gulls among many Common, Black-headed, Herring, Greater Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Also a Lapwing on the island. Elsewhere on the reserve there were lots of Tufted Ducks and Little Grebes, as well as some Pochards, and I had a couple of good Water Rail sightings, one was even walking along the footpath! From the North Hide there were Shoveler, Teal, another Water Rail, Grey Herons and a Little Egret, also some Stonechats on the brambles and fences there. A Fox made an appearance, probably looking for some lunch! Walking back from the hide, I was really pleased to hear, and then see a large group of Bearded Tits, around 15 of them. They didn't show very well, but I still managed to catch glimpses of the males beautiful blue heads as they flew over the path. Also on the way back there was a Cetti's Warbler singing in the reeds.
Next I headed to Portland Harbour. I managed to pick out a distant Black-throated Diver, a first for me, and also a few groups of Red-breasted Mergansers, some Great-crested Grebes and a Red-throated Diver (the first one I've seen in Dorset).
I may upload some shots later, but the weather conditions made photography difficult.
