'Go Wild, Stay Well' - Langford Heathfield Reserve
Posted 24-08-2010 at 11:18 AM by Gowildstaywell
Much of the recent conservation work taking place as part of Mind in Taunton and West Somerset and Somerset Wildlife Trust's 'Go Wild, Stay Well' project has been taking place at Langford Heathfield nature reserve, which is a Somerset Wildlife Trust reserve near Wellington.
The reserve was purchased by Somerset Wildlife Trust in 1982. It is common land, so has not been used for agriculture, meaning that many important wildlife species have survived. The conservation work is concerned with maintaining habitat so that these species can continue to thrive. A variety of birdlife breeds on the reserve during the summer months, including Tree Pipit, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Wood Warbler, Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Nightingale. Butterflies present include Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillary and Green Hairstreak, whilst the woodland provides a haven for dormice and badgers. You may also see the rare lesser horseshoe bat.
If you wish to learn more about the project you can visit Go Wild, Stay Well or for the latest news updates join the facebook group, search for Go Wild, Stay Well. Alternatively you can e-mail the project manager David Topham at davidt@mindtws.org.uk or call the office on 01823 334 906.

| | Go wildNot sure whether this is a blog or an advertisement....interested to see your comment that the land has not been used for agriculture and therefore wildlife has prospered. One feature that has come over loud and clear recently on BBC programmes is that in order to preserve habitat, some agricultural use is essential, and that sheep and cattle in different cases have had to be introduced to allow grassland to flourish and keep species like gorse at bay. |
