Conservastion Task - 2nd Feb 08
Posted 02-02-2008 at 11:01 PM by Deer Stalker
Worked in Wooton Coppice Inclosure today.
We were working on an area that had been a Western Hemlock block which had been felled about 7 years ago & we were clearing the silver Birch that is starting to encroach. In the summer this cleared area has Marbled Whites, the odd Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary along with the common butterflies & Roesel's Bush-cricket.
Just as we started work a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker called & then started to drum. Other birds were Crossbills, Siskins, Green Woodpecker, Mistle Thrush, Coal Tits, Goldcrest & Jays.
Someone also found a dead Grass Snake & I had a little look around the trees near where we were working at lunch & found a dead Roe buck.

| | Good to hear the Lesser-spotted Woodpeckers are becoming active again, it was around this time last year when I saw one at Blackwater Arboretum, I'd love to see one again! |
