I've got some room in my garden to plant a small to medium sized tree. Its a wildlife friendly garden and would a wild cherry be beneficial as an addition??

| | wild life treesI don't think the wild cherry or gean would be a suitable tree for a garden. It grows to over 50 ft, and has a very open habit which means it is no use for nesting in. It has a fairly dense shade and not much will grow beneath it. If you want a big tree try birch (light shade) or a good smaller tree is rowan, or a cultivar of Alder, which can have quite a close habit. For gardens, cultivars are always best, because they are minituarized. It is always a mistake to go for the wild version of anything. They are just far too vigorous. The same wildlife will inhabit the cultivar, as the wild version, and you will have a much prettier tree for your garden. |
