The Wrekin

I have added the Wrekin in telford to the map of wild places. I live not too far from this hill and walk up & round it as often as possible. Its a really beautiful place and has such a diversity of interesting plant life, animal life and my new found passion fungus. it seems every time we visit theres something new to discover. every season there are more treats.
This spring has been amazing me and my boyfriend spent a lovely sunday afternoon in a woods so thick with bluebells as the wind took them they looked like waves lapping up the trunks of the trees. We saw so deers, hares, rabbits, badger sets, numerous birds and my favorite dryads saddle. There is just no end to this place its beauty is other worldly it is said that the author of the lord of the rings walked the wrekin a number of times when he lived in Penkridge and based the shires on this area, having read the books at school it was the first place I imagined, trees roots knotted through rock, the ancient hill fort, the springs, the rich green moss, the knarled old yew trees, the history of the site, its easy to imagine anything of this site. it was said to be made when a cobbler fooled an angry giant who had a vendeta against shrewsbury, the giant dropped the clod of dirt off his shovel and thats how it was made, it was once said to be an old volcano, there are no end to the myths and stories about this magical place.
looking on this site I was a little upset at the lack of people from this area. It is beautifully wild and we have some wonderful places locally which are all linked to the Wrekin. I urge any of you on this site, if you ever find yourself in the telford area, spare some time and visit this old hill, oh and when I say old I mean old, Im no geologist but i read this somewhere the rock it is made of is older than everest also the quarry off to the side of it is one of a very few places in the world where you can see the change between cambrian & precambrian rock. (please note I am not the best at spelling)
