Two birds with one post!

Hi all,
I've been a member here since last year, (when we had our yellow scary frog in the pond.) I'm afraid I don't know much about wildlife/birds, however I've been actively feeding the above for two years now. We always had Thrush nests in our little bit of Ivy, however I put out 3 bird box's last year. One was nested last May by a Blue Tit. Clearing it in September I found a dead chick and was very upset.
This year I watched and wated, a Blue Tit family nested and I looked after them with care ...left it dried worms, cheese, searched out snails and even brought Bill Oddys bird feed! The nest went fine, however when all the noise stopped and it was clear they had gone...I went to clear out and there was two dead chicks!
.... am I doing something wrong?
Also, we have a little Robin every year who comes in winter. He would always go in April, but he's still here and it's almost July! I'm feeding him as well... am I doing wrong?

| | Hi Sheena. They do say that it's as important to feed birds through the summer as it is in the winter, so I'm sure they appreciate your efforts. Mealworms are a healthy and natural option you could try, and I'm pretty sure your blue tits won't much fancy the snails - they prefer little caterpillars etc naturally. As long as the food is not so large as to choke the baby. Last year we had a dead chick left in our nest box, but this year we fledged 10, with a solitary egg left behind. Do you know how many babies fledged? I would take that as the measure of success, rather than deaths as a measure of failure. I guess they will always happen. Enjoy your robin, he obviously feels at home; we too have one that we don't see very much in the summer, but I'm pretty sure he's around, just keeping his head down. Jonners ![]() |
