At last my first proper water vole sighting of 2009.

This rather chubby guy was half way between the two bridges and I watched him happily munch away for several minuets before he "plopped" into the river. He emerged later and I was able to get much closer to him.

I think there are at least two water voles maybe three between the two bridges now. The amount of droppings along that stretch is amazing.
At the end of FebruaryI spent a morning at Rooksbury, arriving at about 07:30. After a good look round, more droppings around the stew ponds and by the water mill I followed the river in to Andover town and out the other side. Plenty of good water vole and otter habitat, but a lot of rubbish as well. Apart from the rubbish the water quality looks really good, chrystal clear. I think I saw a Merlin near to the town centre. If it wasn't I have know idea what it was. After walking back along the river to Rooksbury I drove to Anton Lakes and saw three lovely Egrets, since then I've also seen them at Rooksbury, sitting in the trees. I'm sure it will only be a matter of time that evidence of water voles is also found at these lakes.
