Happy New Year
Posted 11-01-2009 at 04:24 PM by Billy Wobble Dagger
What a cold start to the year, today the 11th has been the first none freezing day for weeks. The ground and some parts of the lakes have been frozen at Rooksbury since the start of the year. The usual ducks, geese and Swans are all about. The Tufted ducks are lovely with there blue bills and beady eyes.

Not sure what these are but I'm sure someone will soon telll me.

Lots of smaller birds as usual including my first dunnock and thrush at Rooksbury.
No water vole sightings this year, to cold for them. But the two latrines by the mill and car park are still in use. I spotted something very small when I was waiting for ratty, I think probably a bank vole certainly the right colour, but he was to fast to get a good look.
Well my cover has been blown today. I was on a work party cutting down trees organised by Test Valley Council and the Hampshire wildlife trust. Sarah from HWT has read this blog and has asked me to write a blog for the there site, how could I refuse. It was so good to be out on a work party again, and the tree cutting was an excellent way to burn of a few pounds of fat!!! We were cutting down trees at Anton Lakes another LNR in Andover on the river Anton. The trees were on the edge of a chalk meadow and had started to encroach into the meadow. Plenty more work needs to be done in the future
