Last days of 2008

After weeks of no sightings a brief glimps of a water vole on Christmas Eve. There is also a fresh latrine between the bridge and the new water mill buildings. The WV has made a sanctuary in the water cress to protect himself from danger, the lovely kestrel is still about perched in a tree awaiting his chance. The water vole was busy dragging food into his sanctury when I saw him. Also fresh droppings on the latrine by the carpark. The water rail I saw a few weeks ago was confirmed by a woman I spoke to the other day. It must be quite a rarity or at least a new comer for Rooksbury. All the usual birds about tits, finches and the robins and wrens. As well as the ducks, swans, herons, coots and moorhens. I saw another kestrel chasing magpies madly on the far side of the main lake which I thought was odd.
Highlight of the 27 Dec was the finding of some anal jelly, no other signs of the otter though.
More duck IDs to come hopefully.

| | the thing is with water rail is that they are the best at hide and seek ever... they can go utterly unoticed with ease - I have done so many breeding birds surveys and not picked them up until I do some evening work and hear the males sqealing their display song (which is extremely eerie and well worth a listen if you want to feel like you're in your own version of lord of the rings) so they may well have been present for a while but in stealth undercover mode ![]() |
