Newts in a barrel
Posted 04-05-2009 at 07:37 AM by Belladonna
Years ago I purchased half a barrel with the intention of planting it with a small fruit tree. However, never got round to it and it filled with rainwater. Too heavy to move so I left it there and built up the sides with rocks and soil with an area of logs and rocks behind it. last year it became evident that there was a leak probably due to the wood rotting. I knew there were a couple newts around so in early autumn, after they would have left the pond I placed a trug inside what was left of the barrel and replaced the Flag Iris etc. and refilled with rain water from my water butt. This year there are four newts and I think they have started laying eggs on some pond weed. I wondered if it was worth feeding them and if so what?
My intention is to add another trug pond nearby in the autumn in an attempt to extend and improve the habitat. Any suggestions? By the way they are smooth newts.
