| | | An attempt at a star photo. A 30 second exposure at f4.5 and the 35mm equivalent of a 27mm lens at ISO 400.
I have tried to get the best out of the photo in PP but don't know if I have gone too far and that some of the fainter "stars" are just artifacts of the processing.
All comments welcomed.

Yes, Orion is right of centre towards the bottom of the shot, Aldaberan and the Hyades up to the top right. Castor and Pollux and the rest of Gemini are to the left.
What I don't know is if all the other points that appear to be stars are real or not. The original photo, straight off the camera showed very little, other than the brightest stars, so I wonder if I have "created" many more.
I'd be grateful if Nytecam could have a look and let me know.

| | | Re: An attempt at a star photo. I'd say they're stars Dave. If it was introduced noise it would be spread pretty evenly over the whole frame.
I like the shot a lot. I'll place a small wager that you were in NW Scotland and not london when you took it! At 30 seconds I would expect the stars to show as a very slight trail rather than a point when viewing the image at 100%. That would be another way of confirming that they are all stars.

This was taken in Gairloch on the NW coast, even the so the hillside picked up some light from the local school. Not that I'm objecting - it is a great area.

| | | Re: An attempt at a star photo. Bingo! Some light on the foreground is good. For me, it wouldn't have half as much impact if the landscape was pitch black.

I tried this from my house, but the light pollution is so bad the sky colour was way off.
Yukk!!

Dave | Excellent image Dave - the stars look good to me but as Dave P says the full frame orginal should hint at slight star-trails in 20s exp from static cam - keep up the good work.
Without wishing to poach your post here's a crude experimental shot from last night [from London backyard!] of Zeta Orionis [left belt star] and the 'Flame' and 'Horsehead' nebula in 60s guided cam on 350mm fl f/5 lens [=Meade ETX-70].
Both nebula are very difficult to see even through a big scope -the Horsehead silhouette nebula especially so - I've never seen it through any telescope only snapped it And yes I've the same orange sky light pollution as Graham - oh the wonders of civilisation!
