| | | Thought I'd found a supernova! Last Monday night I took a pic of the pretty Beehive starcluster M44 in Cancer the Crab and found a faint star not on the pro starmaps like WikiSky - this got me excited [each to his own!]
Had to wait 'till Wednesday night for another clear sky and the 'star' had moved - damn no supernova but an asteroid. I had checked for asteroids on my planetarium programs but they didn't go faint enough. A check on pro site showed it was a known asteroid #2464 Nordenskiold as my pic below with inset the same field 46hrs later and the asteroid moving left - good fun

| | | Re: Thought I'd found a supernova! Here's last night's pic of a new supernova [SN] in Leo the Lion discovered by astro-mate Jack Newton et al in Florida recently - it's still rising in brightness and may with luck be seen through very large amateur scopes - certainly within my photo range. Last night the nearby moon interfered - hence streaks of moonlight across pic Coded SN2012A - the 'A' indicates it's the 1st SN discovery in 2012.
SN type II are the death-throws of a giant star that has run out of 'fuel' and collapse in on themselves under gravity followed by instant explosion outwards. In the explosion heavy elements are created [like gold in your ring and iron in your blood] and 'seed' interstellar space and planets like earth in the distant past.
Briefly [for a few weeks] SN exceed the brilliance of their host galaxy of millions of stars and can be imaged way across the universe even by amateurs who discover most of them. In recent years SN indicate the expansion of the universe since the Big Bang, is accelarating
