| | | new supernova in Whirpool galaxy Discovered in the last 40hrs by amateur astronomers in France/Germany - a supernova in M51 [Whirlpool Galaxy] below the Plough close to zenith at dusk - pretty faint for visual scopes but easy in 10s exposures via cam. My 60s shot from last below

The supernova gets a designation from discovery date thus SN+year+2 letters beginning the year as 'A' -[Z] then 'aa'; ab'; ''ac'.... this one is 'dh' or 'SN 2011dh'.
My M51 supernova pic below from last night shows the SN is still getting brighter . Pic via my piggybacked ETX-70 scope that's little bigger than what birders haul around but it was 'guided' on the galaxy for the 60sec exposure. My setup also on Gallery

| | | Re: new supernova in Whirpool galaxy M51 100s pic via main scope from last night in late twilight and rising full moon - both increase 'noise' so shown as negative image. SN still 'holding up' with no sign of fading |

| | | Re: new supernova in Whirpool galaxy Wow amazing shots there nytcam! It really does take quite a bit to wrap your head around the thought that what we see now happened millions or even billions of yrs ago and what we see is the past not present.
