| | | Wolf 359 - 3rd nearest star to earth Discounting our sun for a moment - red dwarf Wolf 359 in Leo the Lion is the third nearest star to earth at <8LY - my pic below from the other night also shows its rapid apparent motion across the sky in the last 50 years

Just so I'm clear....is the insert a composite of two images taken some years apart showing the position of Wolf 359 coloured blue (~50 ya) and red (~40 ya) for illustrative purposes?
....or maybe not .

Bruce | I marked my recent image with three positions of Wolf 359 - Burnham's Celestial Handbook#2 [out of print] = ~50yrs ago plus more recent blue + red images [as inset] from the Palomar blue and red sky survey plates taken some years apart.
If you find [via Wikisky - a combo of these two surveys] bright nearby red and blue star images they are probably a star near to earth that has moved in the interval between taking the two pictures - Wolf 359 is a classic example
