| | | Discovered an interest Hiya all im pretty new to observing the night sky. I was at my boyfriends this week and he'd just bought his first telescope. It was rather a buzz getting to see saturn for the first time and now i think Im hooked! The only problem is I cant afford any sort of telescope at the mo and i live a long way from my boyfriend. So my question is, would it be possible to get equally good views using bins? Ive got a good set, with strong magnification. Would i be able to see any galaxys like the whirlpool? Are there any good cheap telescopes that anyone knows of? Thanks for the help :-)

| | | Re: Discovered an interest Short answer is no. To get equally good views, ie with as much detail, you will need binoculars that are the same size (ie diameter of the front lens) as your boyfriend's telescope.
All but the very smallest telescopes have lenses or mirrors(depending on the type) which are bigger than most binoculars. When viewing planets binoculars will also be limited by their magnification. To get a decent sized image you need a magnification above what the average binoculars can provide.
You will however, be able to get some good views through ordinary binoculars. IMO the moon looks good through binoculars, the planets can be seen as discs, the Galilean moons of Jupiter are visible and rings of Saturn can just be seen, though not in any detaill and after many years I still find it amazing just how many more stars I can see. You may be able to spot the Whirlpool galaxy in binoculars but I don't think it will look much more than a fuzzy blob.

| | | Re: Discovered an interest Thanks for that info. Hmmm looks like i might hav to save up then to be able to see deep into the night sky. For now though i think id be happy if i was able to identify planets with the bins and to appreciate the moon . I gather that reflectors are the cheapest telescopes could you suggest a reasonably priced one that still is good to view from?

| | | Re: Discovered an interest Look at the pages on skiesandscopes which will provide the info and show price range.Best not to go for anything under £100.Sky Watcher has some good ones.Mine is a Sky Watcher 1145.That cost £129.00 when bought in a shop 3years ago.Keeps me interested now and for another few years.Have a look at the Heavens Above site.To sees What is up there in the night sky.You can get a good chart for the month on Sky Maps site as well. Do enjoy and look through the Astronomy threads in the FORUMS.

| | | Re: Discovered an interest Only ever bought i book in The Works bookshop as it had monthly star charts. The rest of the info is gleaned from trawling the web.Have a look at Amazon site or local astro shop Sometimes offers can be found.Even used in good condition from local papers might help...aDm...
My wife and I used spotting scopes last night to view stars, moon and Saturn at 22.000hrs last night. As we now have one each. Both under £90.00.

Stargazers are a friendly bunch.
You're welcome to our Ewell Astro Soc* viewing evenings here in Surrey but suspect that's too far. Anyway good luck

| | | Re: Discovered an interest What are peoples views of the celestron powerscope 127eq? Ive seen reviews that the scope itself is good but the tripod and lenses could be better. Anyone had any experiences with it? .
