| | | wana see my supernova? My discovery from last Friday - an exploding 'new star' or supernova seen way across space at 200MLY distance! |

I've registered my discovery with the International Astronomical Union [IAU] that oversees all such matters against strict criterior and await a pro spectrum to define precisely what type of star it really is.
It's close proximity to or in a distant galaxy almost certainly means it is a supernova but not until a spectrum is taken and analysed. It then gets a mundane designation like SN 2011ay -the double letters run through the alphabet with each new SN discovery. It could get serious pro interest and science if unique in some way.
Discovery is only the beginning but my task if essentially over except to monitor it, with other amateurs, to trace its progress over the next few months until is fades from visibility. Now to search and discover another SN!!
Sounds boring compared to Nov 5th or the Biggest Full Moon but whatever turns you on and its the peak of what amateur astronomers can contribute apart from discovering a comet - then it's named after you - now we're talking to ego

Plus my telescopes have been gathering dust in the shed for a while now Always loved astronomy since I was a kid but the ecology studies took over... Might get them out again, if they are still functional! |
