| | | Iridium flare Monday night walked out to the shed to get some onions (just before 6pm), nice clear night looked up, oh a satellite. Then boom it turned very bright for a short time and the continued as before.
Ah this must be an iridium flare that I have heard about. For some reason I thought it was to do with the element iridium a sort of spectral flare but it's not (in case you wondered) - it's the satellite type, and it's the antennae directly reflecting the suns rays for an instant. Apparently you can see them in the day time which would be rather good.
Anyway to confirm this I looked on the good old Heavens Above website and sure enough my diagnosis was correct - this was my first - aren't they bright?!!

| | | Re: Iridium flare Love the Heavens Above site.Iridiums are very bright.Have looked at timings and seen many. When directly above they are very visible.Always using the site for ISS passes as are visible at the moment during the evenings.Good for all visible satellite passes. Also use whole sky chart very often.Daily check for sun and moon also used.Position of comets is useful as well.

| | | Re: Iridium flare Yes I have used it for the ISS I remember seeing it a few years ago when the shuttle had just undocked and the two moving across the sky in unison - wonderful.
