| | | deepsky wonders Summertime ended last weekend and this means winter constellations are on view before midnight I made use of this on Sunday night with some deepsky images in brief exposures of M1 supernova remnant in Taurus and the M42 great nebula in Orion etc...
In the horns of Taurus the Bull is M1 [first in Charles Messier's catalogue] and seen as a brilliant new star [nova] by Chinese and Arab astronomers in 1054. The resultant violent explosion is still expanding into space at 1500km/sec and seen today as a patch of twisted glowing gas with a 'pulsar' at it core - the remnant of the former giant star that exploded. The pulsar is a tiny dense star 12miles in diameter spinning 30 times per second! the M1 nebula is 6500 LY away and 11LY diameter and bright throughout the whole spectrum from gamma-rays, x-rays, light all the way to long radio waves.
M42 nebula is just visible to the naked eye on a clear night as a hazy patch centred in the Sword of Orion 'hanging' beneath Orion's three Belt stars. It's perhaps the brightest nebula in the sky and snapped below in 1 second exposure [RH image]! It's a nursery of new stars 1300 LY away and 24LY diameter and glows red with hydrogen light. |
