As a boy I lived in Mill Hill, North London, My father was an amateur astronomist and member of the Hendon Observatory. One night in about 1949/50 he excitedly woke me from my bed and called me to the window which looked north.
I can remember seeing a green glow, he told me it was the aurora borealis. Worth pointing out that there wasn't much in the way of electric street lighting then, mainly still gas.

I saw them once about 30 years ago when I was working in Sweden - an amazing spectacle, one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. |

Pretty much the same for seeing the perseids (Bloomin clouds, keep thwarting all these fab celestial events! Having said that, I did have a good sighting of the perseids a couple of years back, up on the Ashdown Forest )

| | | Re: Northern Lights As it happens we saw nothing. We camped both nights in a park in Pitlochrie and got absolutely no hassle either night.
On the Saturday we went to Bruar Falls, then off to a distillery. In the afternoon we travelled north to a highland games then on to Grantown on Spey to see what the fly fishing was like.
All in all I think we covered about 900 miles. A very enjoyable weekend which I only decided upon at about 2p.m. on the Friday afternoon
