| | | Re: stargazing - a winter thing? Well I've learnt for the WAB posters here that stargazing is a winter thing or perhaps more accurately a non-summer thing to be engaged very casually from the porch with a glass of wine maybe - well autumns's arrived since my thread post and I've been busy.
However September was a poor month for clear night skies compared to May-Aug here in Surrey. Here's my Dumbbell nebula M27 taken in 30s ex on the last day of Sept - trying to see how short an exposure still gives acceptable results - my peers mock that I won't do 1-2 hrs exposure on a single object in the sky

| | | Re: stargazing - a winter thing? September may have been a poor month, Nytecam, but that is an excellent photo.
I think you are correct in saying stargazing is a Winter thing, at least in urban areas or close to urban areas. Apart from longer nights, we often get clearer skies in the winter.
Although there are some great summer constellation - eg Cygnus, Lyra, I think there is something special about the winter ones, but that may be that the first one I identified was Orion when I was about 9.
I used a star map in an Arthur Mee encycolpedia and it is difficult to describe just how amazed I was when I realise the size of Orion.
