Venus?
Really bright star to the North right now (9:40) assume Venus?

Could the "star" have been a little to west of NW, rather than to the north?

If so, then Venus is likely.

PS Mars and Saturn are also visible in the night sky now.

Yes, sorry, more like NW than N (viewing from Hertfordshire).

T'was the only visible star in the sky.
